You may have noticed your car insurance rates increasing.

You may have noticed your auto rates increasing.  Why are my rates going up you may ask?  I have had no accidents.  We have noticed too.

Spencer Insurance Agency wants you to know we keep an eye on industry trends to make sure our clients are getting the coverage they need at a competitive price.  We are proactive in checking to make sure you are getting all discounts and make sure the company you have is competitive.

As independent agents Spencer Insurance represents several top rated insurance companies and can choose the company that offers you the coverage you need at a competitive price.  We understand that price is important but that the “True Cost of Insurance” can be much higher if not properly covered.

So why are car insurance rates rising.  There are several factors.  Here are a few:

  • According to Strategy & PricewaterhouseCoopers, 2016 Auto Industry Trends, people are buying more cars. In 2015, Americans bought a record 17.5 million new vehicles.
  • People are driving more. Due to lower gas prices and higher employment, 2015 saw the highest increase in driving in 25 years according to U.S. Department of Transportation.
  • Repair Costs are rising. Newer car repairs include costly electronics – like cameras, sensors and other safety devices.
  • Injury costs are rising due to medical inflation
  • According to the National Safety Council, Insurance Information Institute traffic fatalities are reaching record levels. 2015 brought the largest single – year increase in driving – related deaths since 1966. Worse yet, we’re on track for a two – year increase of 18 %.
  • Distracted Driving is increasing! According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, fewer people are talking while driving, but more are texting and surfing the web.

We all know it is crazy out on the roads these days.  How many times have you been at a red light when it turns to green and the car in front of you does not move because the person driving is texting?

We ask that you be careful about switching just due to price.  Check out our article “True Cost of Insurance” before you switch and contact us to compare the quote you received with your actual coverage. Yes, sad to say some agents will quote lower limits to get your business. You may not realize it until you have a claim when it is too late. Here are some additional reasons why you may not want to switch carriers even if you save some money:

  • You may have a disappearing deductible or deductible credit which you will lose.
  • You may have accident forgiveness on your current policy.
  • Because rates are changing for all our carriers you may find the company you switch to costs more come next renewal. You then lose loyalty credits.
  • Does the company you choose have the same level of claim service you have come to expect?
  • Are you talking to the same people when you call your insurance agent or do you just get the next person available to take your call?

Spencer Insurance has a licensed and highly experienced team. You know when you call that you will be talking to Joan, Beth, Denise, Steve or me.  If you have any questions please contact us!  We are here for you!

Please drive safely and pull over to use your phone to make a call, text or check the GPS.

The Devil is in the details . . .

Teen Driver Insurance and Resources

I am sure you have heard the saying “The devil is in the details.”  This applies to insurance as well.  When you shop around for insurance you may think you are being quoted the same coverage only to find out the reason the quote is cheaper is because you have lesser coverage. When you call the 800 number to get a quote in 5 or 15 minutes you don’t know if the person you are talking to has been on the job for a week or 7 years. They may know very little about insurance and just follow a script. They have no skin in the game if they give you poor advice or if they don’t tell you the coverage you have is not sufficient.  They may not talk to you again, ever.

That is why Spencer Insurance Agency asks our clients to call us when they get a quote from another company before they consider switching to a new company.  We are a local independent agency which means we write with more than one company and all of our staff members are licensed professionals, not just order-takers.  You can even stop in and talk to us! Our staff understands insurance and knows that details are important. You talk to the same people when you call us.

Spencer Insurance Agency is not offended when a client calls and tells us they feel their rates are too high.  We will review your policies and see if there is anything we can do to bring the price down that will not put you at a greater risk because you have less coverage. We have several quality carriers not just one.

Recently, a client notified us they switched to another company to get a much better rate.  When the client sent us the new policies for us to review they were shocked to find how much coverage they lost.  They had a 2% wind deductible which means if there was a  thunder storm with strong winds and their house sustained wind damage (tree blown onto house, shingles blown off roof, etc.) that they had a $8,000 deductible. The policy our client had with our carrier was a $1,000 deductible regardless of the cause of the covered loss.  They also did not have any water backup coverage and other coverage was missing as well.  When they called the new company to inquire about the missing coverage they could not get through to anyone that could help them and became very frustrated by the service. Yes, they got a better price but the coverage and service they received was very poor.  They cancelled those policies and came back to Spencer Insurance.

We understand that price is important but please call us before you switch so we can help evaluate the offer you received before you switch.  A savings of $500 could end up costing you $20,000 when you have a claim.

Know someone who has a teen driver?

Parents: This Doesn’t Have to be a Stressful Time in Your Life. You Can Keep Your Teen Safe, Avoid Paying High Insurance Rates, and Get Peace of Mind!

I remember when our four children were teenagers and wanted to learn to drive.  UGH!

To be honest my children preferred to be taught to drive by their mother, Tammy.  Truth is Tammy has a lot more patience.  What did Dirty Harry say?  “A man has to know his limitations.  Thank you Tammy!

School is back in session so please driver carefully!

IMG_4723

I have been walking my dog in the morning this summer.  It is great to get some exercise for me and Luna.  Now Luna whines to go out as soon as I wake up.  The mornings are getting darker as the sun rises later.  Keep this in mind this week as students go back to school.

Many high schools start early and the students are walking to the bus stop or school in the dark.  Be aware of them.  Allow yourself some extra time to get to work as there will be more congestion now that school is back in session. You may be slowed down by a school bus or students crossing the street.  Be patient.

This is also a good time for parents of teen drivers to check out our website designed just for the parents of teen drivers. Parents need to continue to train their teen drivers even after they get their license.  Make sure they understand the “rules of the house” in regards to driving your car.  Do you have a teen/parent contract?  Do they know the consequences of their actions?  Will they pay your deductible if they have an accident? Spell this out today in a teen/parent contract.  Parent’s need to educate their teen drivers on how car insurance works.

Check out our website designed for the parents of teen drivers to get more tips, links to your state’s motor vehicle department, a list of some driver’s training schools and much more.

Please be careful driving now that school is back in session.

Have a Teen Driver? This summer is the time to brush up on their driving skills!

teen-driver5

When teen drivers get a permit, parents spend many hours training their teen drivers. As parents we want to make sure our teens are safe when driving and develop safe driving skills.

Many parents stop training their teen after they get their license.  Why???  Summer is a great time to drive with your teen driver to observe their driving habits and help them develop new driving skills.  When we vacationed in Maine or New Hampshire I would let my teen drivers take over the wheel while on the interstates and rural roads.  We don’t have a lot of rural roads around our neighborhood so having them drive in New Hampshire and Maine sharpened their driving skills.

So if you are down the shore, up in the mountains or in another state make sure you let your teen drivers take over the wheel and get some experience.  Help them develop new safe driving skills.

Try this all times of the year.  In the Fall we have slippery roads due to falling leaves, in the winter there is snow and ice.  Take them out during these times even if just in a parking lot to learn how to drive in these conditions.

Check out our many tips in our Parents of Teen Drivers Website.  Call us at 215-885-2200 if you have any questions or would like a second opinion on your car or home insurance costs and coverage.

What to do if you are in a car accident.

Charlie teen driver accident 001

Having a car accident can be a very traumatic experience especially when it is your first accident. Most car accidents are minor events so we want to give you a few tips.  Cell phones can be very helpful in the event of an auto accident.  Try to make sure the phone is fully charged when driving so you can use it to take pictures and call for help.  Here are a few tips should you have a car accident.

First, be prepared in the event you have a claim:

  • Review your coverage with Spencer Insurance Agency to make sure you have the coverage you need.
  • Have one of our ID card holders with your vehicle registration, insurance card and emergency contact information. (The ID card holder has tips on what to ask for when exchanging information.  Call us for one if you don’t have one in every car you own.)
  • Pen and paper
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Raingear (poncho) and blanket

When in an accident:

  • Pull over to a nearby safe location if possible. If not move yourself and your passengers to a safe location near your car.
  • Stay calm and treat everyone courteously.
  • Call 911 immediately if there are any injuries. If you are injured do nothing but wait for help.
  • Contact the police. If there are no injuries or a car does not need to be towed the police may not come.
  • Try to locate witnesses.
  • Use your cell phone to:
    • Take a picture of the other driver’s license and insurance ID card.
    • Take a picture of the other car’s license plate.
    • Take a picture of the damage to the other car and your car.
    • Take a picture of the driver and any other people in the other car.
  • Exchange information but do not admit fault. Apologizing may seem to be the nice thing to do but you could be admitting fault.
    • Name, phone number, address, email address, license number and the names of all occupants and witnesses
    • Insurance information including company name, policy number and phone number. (If other driver does not have insurance ID card call the police and tell them driver does not have proof of insurance.
    • Get officer’s name and badge number.
    • Find out the location of the accident (city, township or borough) so you can get a copy of the police report.
  • If your car is not drivable call for roadside assistance. Some car insurance policies will include towing/roadside assistance otherwise the police will help you find a tow company.
  • After you have collected the information call your insurance company and report the accident. Most Insurance ID cards will have the claim number of the company and your policy number.
  • Call your agent

We hope you never have a car accident. Spencer Insurance Agency wants you to be prepared if you do.  Make sure all drivers, especially teen drivers know what to do when they have an accident.  Please feel free to print this email and put it in with your ID card.  Call us at 215-885-2200 to review your coverage before you have an accident.  Happy Spring!

Fall Maintenance Tips for your Home and Auto

The Fall Season can be a beautiful time of the year in our area. With cooler temperatures and the leaves changing, the fall is a great time of the year to get out of the house and enjoy the outdoors.

Fall is also a great time to prepare for those cold winter days that are coming. I imagine you remember our winter last year with all the snow, ice and school and business closings. Hopefully, this winter will be a bit milder.

Here are a few tips to prepare your home and auto for winter:

  • Put the ice scraper and snow removal tool in your car. Remember a few years ago we had a snowstorm in October?
  • Check the tread on your tires to make sure you have proper traction in the snow.
  • Replace worn wiper blades.
  • Prepare a winter emergency Kit for your home and auto. Check out http://www.ready.gov/kit-storage-locations for some kit ideas.
  • Have your furnace serviced and cleaned by a qualified Technician. Replace your furnace filter.
  • Move flammable materials away from your house and attached garage. Keep them in a shed away from your home.
  • Insulate pipes that are exposed to cold areas in the house.
  • Check for damage to your roof and gutters. Clean any debris from your gutters.
  • Have your chimney inspected by a professional.
  • Clean the clothes dryer exhaust ducts and space under the dryer.
  • Check your fire extinguishers to make sure they are not out of date. If you are not sure it’s best to replace them.
  • Trim trees around your house so the weight of ice and snow will not cause them to rub against your home.
  • If you have a storm sewer near your home make sure it is clear of any debris like sticks and leaves.

A little maintenance on your home now can save you from having a claim later. This can help you save money on your homeowner’s insurance. For more tips on saving money on your auto and homeowner’s policies go to our website. Enjoy the Fall weather and let’s hope we have a better winter this year. Call us today if we can be of service for any of your insurance needs.

School is out! Time for that talk with your teen driver. . .

teen-driver5
Summer brings a break from school and an increase in the time your teen drivers spend in the car.

Here are a couple tips:

  • Spend some time with your teen driver in teaching them how to merge onto an expressway or interstate highway and practice changing lanes. Many of us will travel to vacation spots and use interstate highways. Why not use this as a teaching moment for your teen driver.
  • Set the rules for Teen Driving. Remind them of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations “5 to Drive Rules.”
    1. No cell phones while driving
    2. No extra passengers
    3. No Speeding
    4. No Alcohol
    5. Always buckle up.

Most accidents are caused by driver inattention and distraction. Stress safe driving habits with your teen driver.  Review the parent/teen contract on our website to set expectations for your teen driver. For more tips for parents of teen drivers go to our website at www.spencerinsurance.com.  This website is full of information for the parents of teen drivers.

Have a safe an enjoyable summer!
