Do you know how to get your annual Social Security Statement?

retirement crossroads

Many clients have asked me this question:  “In the past I received my Social Security statement by mail near my birthday. I have not received one recently, what happened?”

The U.S. Social Security Administration no longer mails the statements.  You can still get your statement annually by creating an online account on “My Social Security.” Visit www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount and click where it says “Create an Account.”

To set up an account you need to be 18 years old and have a valid email address, social security number and U.S. mailing address.  When you set it up you will be asked for some personal information to verify your identity.

After you set up your account you will be able to get your Social Security Statement and can print or save the statement.  This statement is very valuable when planning your financial and life insurance needs.  It also tells you your options for your benefits at retirement, disability benefits, and your family survivor benefit.

If you have any questions call our office at 215-885-2200.  This statement is a valuable tool when reviewing your estate and retirement plans.  Let us know by commenting if you were successful in setting up your account.

Big Spin Wheel

Our Spencer Big $pin just got BIGGER!!

What’s new?

At the end of each quarter we will randomly pick the name of a person who has referred someone to our agency in the previous quarter.  That person wins the opportunity to come to our office and spin the Spencer Wheel for a chance to win an Apple iPad Mini, $150 in Cash, or a $100 Gift Card!

What stays the same?

Spencer Insurance will continue to highlight a local charity each quarter.  We will send $5 for each referral we receive during that quarter to that charity.

If you know someone who would benefit from the same great service you have come to expect, refer them to us!  We would rather reward our clients for referrals than spend money on advertising.  Thank you for your referrals!

Common mistakes consumers make when purchasing insurance.

numbers

“40% of Respondents said they were not confident or only somewhat confident that they have adequate and appropriate insurance coverage for their needs.”

A new national survey conducted by Trusted Choice and the Big I revealed this alarming statement.

Many of you have returned the Renewal Checklist we mailed to you in December.  We will be reviewing these checklists and getting in touch with you if we have not already done so. Thank you for taking this step.

It is very important that you keep us updated on any changes in your lives.  See page 4 of this newsletter for some details on how life changing events can affect your insurance coverage.

There are many common mistakes that consumers make when purchasing insurance.

  • Not understanding their limits – If your property damage limit on your auto insurance is only $25,000 then you are responsible for any property damage you cause over $25,000.  This is just one example.
  • Disregarding Discounts – Do you have your auto and home insurance with different companies?  It may be appropriate to do this but you could be losing a 15 or 20% discount.  Are you receiving all your discounts?
  • Not insuring valuables properly – Most valuables such as jewelry, furs, silverware, fine arts and collectibles have specific limits on the amount of coverage on a standard homeowner’s insurance policy.  Many of these items should be insured under a separate policy.
  • Not protecting your biggest asset: your home – Changes in occupancy, putting the home in a trust, renting your home while you are away, or leaving a home vacant will impact your homeowner’s insurance.  Not having the proper coverage such as flood insurance, backup of sewer and drains, and ordinance or law coverage can leave you paying for claims out of your pocket.
  • Choosing the cheapest policy – At Spencer Insurance Agency we know the “True Cost of Insurance” includes the money you spend out of pocket since you did not have the proper coverage.  Choosing the cheapest rate could be devastating to your finances and bankrupt you.

Dealing with an independent insurance agent like Spencer Insurance helps you select the best coverage at a competitive price.  Spencer Insurance represents many quality insurance companies so we can find the best insurance package for you.  Call us today at 215-885-2200 to ask for a review of your insurance.

Thank you for your business! Happy Holidays!

Thank you for the privilege of serving your insurance needs.  May the holidays bring joy to you and your loved ones, and may the New Year bring you much success.

Happy Holidays, from your friends at Spencer Insurance Agency, Inc.!

Daylight Saving Time ends and some Fall Home Mainenance Tips. . .

clocks back for DST end

Daylight Savings Time ends this weekend.  Don’t forget to set back your clocks so you can enjoy that extra hour of sleep.

Now that you are rested take action to protect your family by replacing all the batteries in your home’s smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.  How many times do we hear about a row home in Philadelphia that caught fire and someone died in the fire?  There were no working smoke detectors. Go out, buy a bunch of batteries and replace them now.  It could end up being the best money you spent.

Here are some Fall home maintenance tips to help you avoid possible claims.  Even if you have the proper protection, filing a claim is still an inconvenience.  Plus most homeowner’s insurance deductibles are $1,000.  So take these steps now to prevent the loss:

  •  Clear all leaves from your gutters and nearby storm drains to prevent water backup
  • Inspect your roof for damage or loose shingles
  • Trim trees and bushes that are rubbing against your house or roof.
  • Turn off all your outside faucets and hose connections to prevent pipes freezing and bursting.
  • Have a professional tune up your furnace, wood stove and chimney to prevent explosions, fires and puff-backs.
  • Test your sump pump to make sure the battery is working.  Consider a battery back-up if you do not have one.  Google “how to test a sump pump.”
  • Winterize the lawn mower so it works next Spring.
  • Get ready for winter
    • Make sure you have enough shovels and ice melt
    • Put your snow removers and ice scrappers in the car.
    • Tune up the snow blower before you need it.
    • Check out this website for more winter tips.

At Spencer Insurance Agency we want to help you with ways to reduce your insurance costs.  Regular home maintenance is one of the best ways to save on Homeowner’s Insurance.  For more tips on saving money on your homeowner’s insurance check out our report: Spencer’s Tips: How to Save Money And what you need to know about your Homeowner’s Insurance.

Remember, The True Cost of Insurance includes what you need to pay out of pocket because you did not have the right protection.

Client Appreciation Open House Wednesday October 2, 2013

Spencer Insurance will hold a Client Appreciation Open House on Wednesday October 2, 2013 to show our appreciation to all our clients for making our 50th Anniversary possible.   Come out to our new offices between 3:00 PM and 7:00 PM for some fun, food, drink, and prizes!  Bring the entire family!

Someone will spin our Big Wheel every 15 minutes for a chance to win a prize.  So mark the calendar and bring the family.  We look forward to seeing all of you.  RSVP at info@spencerinsurance.com or call our office at 215-885-2200.

Back in October of 1963 Travelers Insurance appointed Ed Spencer as an agent in the Jenkintown area.  One year later Walter Hauck was appointed by Travelers and both set up shop together sharing office space and staff for several years.  Many of our clients remember their location behind the Van Sciver furniture Store just above the John Wannamaker department store.  Wow, remember those names!

In 1993 Charlie purchased his father’s agency and one year later purchased Walter Hauck’s agency.  The agencies were combined to form Spencer Insurance Agency, Inc. The second generation of Spencers, Steve and Charlie, are preparing the agency for the next 50 years.

Spencer Insurance Agency, Inc. has grown to become a very strong, local, family owned, independent insurance agency representing several outstanding companies.  Our goal, which has not changed since 1963, is to provide the proper insurance coverage to our clients at a very competitive price and to continue to provide an exceptional level of service after the sale.  While we understand that price is important we recognize that the “True Cost of Insurance” can be much higher if you do not have the proper coverage.

In this our 50th year we are very grateful to our clients and companies for making this day possible.  We thank you for your loyalty, trust and referrals over the years. We are honored to continue to have the opportunity to serve our clients of many years.  Some of our clients started with us back in 1963.  We continue to service many of the 2nd and 3rd generations of these families.

Charlie and Steve have a great mentor in their father, Ed Spencer.  My father taught us the importance of continuing to take care of our client after the sale.  Many of our clients are like family. We look forward to servicing your insurance needs for another 50 years. Okay, maybe the next generation will have to help us with this task.  Come out on October 2nd and reminisce and let us know how we can continue to assist you in the future!

Please share with us some of your experiences with our agency over the past 50 years.  Thank you!

YOU ARE INVITED!

Back to School Safety Checklist

school-bus

It is Back to School Time once again.  As drivers we all need to be more careful when driving as more children will be walking, biking and taking school busses to school.  Be patient and aware of Teen drivers on the road. Give them some space. Prepare your children for their walk or ride to school.

The National Safety Council (www.nsc.org) provides some excellent safety tips for you as your children return to school.  If you do not have any school age children pass this onto someone who does.

Walking to School

  • Review your family’s walking safety rules
  • Walk on sidewalks when available. If one is not available then walk facing the traffic
  • Never dart in front of a parked car
  • Before you cross the street look all ways to see if cars are coming
  • Practice walking to school with your child

Riding a Bike to School

  • Make sure your child always wears a helmet
  • Teach your children the rules of the road they need to know to ride their bicycles.
    • Ride on the right side of the road and in single file
    • Come to a complete stop before crossing the street

Riding the bus to school

  • Go to the bus stop with your child and teach them the proper way of getting on and off the bus
  • Make sure your children stand six feet away from the curb

Preventing backpack-related injuries

  • Chose a backpack for your child carefully.
  • Don’t overstuff a backpack; it should weigh no more than 10 to 20% of your child’s body weight.
  • Ask your children to use both straps when wearing their backpack to evenly distribute the weight.

Have a great school year.  For more tips visit our website at www.spencerinsurance.com
