Are your summer toys insured?

The hot, hazy, lazy days of summer are here.   I hope you are having fun taking some time to kick back and relax.  Summer is a time to enjoy outdoor activities like golf, boating, fishing, water skiing, swimming and a barbecue.  There are a lot of summer toys like golf carts, trampolines, swimming pools, boats, jet skis, ATVs, motorcycles and motor homes,  just to name a few.

Summer is the time to enjoy these toys, but make sure you have the proper coverage.  An accident with one of these toys could lead to property damage and a lawsuit.  Are you prepared for that?  Many times people are surprised to find they have limited or no coverage under their auto and homeowner’s insurance policies for these toys.

Does your homeowner’s or auto insurance cover these toys?  Sometimes the answer is yes but way too often the answer is no.  Call us today at 215-885-2200 to make sure you have the proper protection or contact us from our website.

Let’s discuss a few of these toys. . .

  • Liability from backyard toys such as a trampoline or pool is covered by your homeowner’s insurance but there is a problem.  Due to the nature of the injury that can occur, most homeowner’s policies provide only limited coverage.  You should purchase an umbrella policy and make sure your policies don’t restrict claims from these items.
  • Jet Skis/personal watercraft– These items are fast and fun and you probably have no liability coverage under your homeowner’s policy.  You need to buy a personal watercraft policy and umbrella policy if you own a personal watercraft.  Be careful, not all umbrella policies cover your personal watercraft.  If you rent a personal watercraft while on vacation you have no liability insurance.  You are riding around with no insurance. Purchase the coverage from the marina.
  • Boats– You have some limited coverage on your Homeowner’s policy for damage to your boat, but sinking and banging the dock is not covered.  You also have limited coverage for liability as long as the boat is a sailboat under 26 feet or your boat has an outboard motor less than 25 horsepower.  If you rent a sailboat under 26 feet or a boat with an outboard motor you have some liability coverage from your homeowner’s insurance.  Why risk having limited or no coverage?  Purchase a boat policy for your boat.
  • Motorcycles or ATV – If you own a motorcycle, your auto and homeowner’s policy provide no coverage.  You need to purchase a motorcycle policy or recreational vehicle endorsement.  If you rent a motorcycle while on vacation you have no coverage from your auto policy and no coverage on your homeowner’s policy if the motorcycle requires registration (Hint – Most do!).  Hopefully the place that rented you the motorcycle can provide you insurance; otherwise you are riding around with no coverage!
  • Golf Carts– When you play a round of golf and rent a golf cart you have liability coverage under your home and auto policies.  You have some limited property damage coverage in this case.  What if you own a golf cart?  This gets tricky so talk to us.  The golf cart is covered while on a golf course, but you may need an endorsement if you travel off the golf course.

Summer is here. . .

Are you a shore on Pocono’s family?

I prefer the shore in the fall when it is less crowded.  My family’s vacation spot has been on the lakes of New Hampshire and Maine.  What a great area to vacation.

I wanted to give you a heads up as we approach the summer season and all the fun that goes with it.  My job is to make sure you can do the things you love to do because you have the right coverage if something goes wrong.  Here are a few things to consider:

  • Make sure when you rent a car that your personal car insurance policy will cover that rental car. Many ask us “Should we buy the waiver?”  Check out our FAQs.
  • If you own a boat or jet ski/personal watercraft, do you have liability insurance? If you rent a boat or jet ski/personal watercraft you probably have no coverage. Check out my article “Are your “Summer Toys” properly insured?”
  • Have a teen driver. Check this out!

For many of us the summer is a little less hectic.  This is a great time to stop and review your finances and insurance.  When was the last time you had a life insurance review?  Contact us today for a review.

I hope you all have an enjoyable summer.

We had a great time on Sebago Lake in Maine with the family.  A few pictures from Sebago lake, Cresent Beach State Park, the basin in Franconia Notch NH and a family outing to the Clambake restaurant to get my lobster.

Share your vacation photos with us on our Facebook Page!  We will pick some to put in our next newsletter.  Hope you have a great summer!

All of us at Spencer Insurance Agency hope you have a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend. Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer in our area.  Many of us will be heading down the shore or to the Poconos.

Since it is the start of summer we want to mention that we have a “Summer Section” of our website with information and frequently asked questions we receive during the summer months. Have some “summer toys”, renting a car on vacation or getting your child ready to head off to college? Check out our “Summer Section.”

Also, let’s make sure we pause to celebrate the reason we celebrate Memorial Day. It commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War (it is celebrated near the day of reunification after the Civil War), it was expanded after World War I to include all who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Many people observe this holiday by visiting cemeteries and memorials. A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local time. Another tradition is to fly the flag of the United States at half-staff from dawn until noon local time.  Volunteers often place American flags on each grave site at National Cemeteries. Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars take donations for poppies in the days leading up to Memorial Day; the poppy’s significance to Memorial Day is the result of the John McCrae poem “In Flanders Field.”

In addition to remembrance, Memorial Day is also used as a time for picnics, barbecues, family gatherings, and sporting events. One of the longest-standing traditions is the running of the Indianapolis 500, which has been held in conjunction with Memorial Day since 1911. Please join us in celebrating our brave Men and Women who have given their life defending our freedom.  Make sure the veterans in your circle know how much you appreciate the risks they took, and how glad you are they survived.

Summer is upon us! I thought this would be a good time to share some “Summer Tips” with you.

  • Beach and Pool: Skin Cancer is a serious problem. Make sure you use sunscreen, UVA/UVB sunglasses, and wear a hat to avoid prolong exposure to the sun.
  • Grill Safety: Keep an eye on that gas grill and make sure the hoses have not been chewed by animals. Make sure to clean the grill periodically as grease buildup can cause flare ups and fires. Charcoal grills are more dangerous than gas grills. Be careful when applying the lighter fluid. The location of your grill is critical. Keep it away from your house and garage. Be careful if you grill on the deck especially with charcoal grills. A house on my street had a fire that was caused by a coal that escaped from the bottom of the charcoal grill and fell under the deck. The coal smoldered until later that night when flames shot up the side of the house.
  • Water safety: Learn more about pool and boat safety. The American Red Cross offers tips on their website at http://www.redcross.org/prepare/disaster/water-safety. The U.S. Coast Guard offers many tips for boater’s safety. Consider taking a Coast Guard safety course which are offered locally. Check out the Coast Guard website at http://www.uscgboating.org.
  • Make sure you check on your elderly neighbors and family. Make sure their homes are properly ventilated with fans or air conditioning to keep them cool and safe.
  • Pets: Make sure you protect your pets from the heat. Keep them in shady areas and do not do any strenuous exercising with them when it is hot. Stay away from asphalt and sandy areas as their paws could burn. Make sure they have plenty of water even when you travel or take them with you on a summer picnic. Make sure you protect them from fleas and ticks as you don’t want your home to become infested with these annoying bugs.

Spencer Insurance Agency has many valuable Summer reports on our website at www.spencerinsurance.com.  Some of the topics we discuss on our website are:

  • Are your “Summer Toys” properly covered? (Boats, jet ski, motorcycle, ATV or golf cart)
