Know someone who has a teen driver?

Parents: This Doesn’t Have to be a Stressful Time in Your Life. You Can Keep Your Teen Safe, Avoid Paying High Insurance Rates, and Get Peace of Mind!

I remember when our four children were teenagers and wanted to learn to drive.  UGH!

To be honest my children preferred to be taught to drive by their mother, Tammy.  Truth is Tammy has a lot more patience.  What did Dirty Harry say?  “A man has to know his limitations.  Thank you Tammy!

Spencer Insurance wants to help you!  Did you know Spencer Insurance has a website exclusively for the Parents of Teen Drivers?  Check it out!

This website will provide you:

Let us help you as you train your teen driver to be a safe driver.  Most importantly lead by example.  If you text and use your cell phone while driving what message are you sending your teen driver?

Good luck and call us at 215-885-2200 if we can be of any assistance.

School is back in session so please driver carefully!

I have been walking my dog in the morning this summer.  It is great to get some exercise for me and Luna.  Now Luna whines to go out as soon as I wake up.  The mornings are getting darker as the sun rises later.  Keep this in mind this week as students go back to school.

Many high schools start early and the students are walking to the bus stop or school in the dark.  Be aware of them.  Allow yourself some extra time to get to work as there will be more congestion now that school is back in session. You may be slowed down by a school bus or students crossing the street.  Be patient.

This is also a good time for parents of teen drivers to check out our website designed just for the parents of teen drivers. Parents need to continue to train their teen drivers even after they get their license.  Make sure they understand the “rules of the house” in regards to driving your car.  Do you have a teen/parent contract?  Do they know the consequences of their actions?  Will they pay your deductible if they have an accident? Spell this out today in a teen/parent contract.  Parent’s need to educate their teen drivers on how car insurance works.

Check out our website designed for the parents of teen drivers to get more tips, links to your state’s motor vehicle department, a list of some driver’s training schools and much more.

Please be careful driving now that school is back in session.

Does your agent send you an Annual Review Checklist each year? Why not???

Laura Spencer in the 3rd Grade - Glenside PA

This is a picture of my daughter when she was in fourth grade computer class.  Things have changed since fourth grade.

To quote Heraclitus “The Only Thing That is Constant is Change.”

Things have changed since my daughter was in fourth grade.  There is more computing power in a cell phone than there was in that computer.

That is why Spencer Insurance sends an Annual Review Checklist to our clients once per year.

Spencer Insurance Agency makes coverage recommendations based on your lifestyle. Life changes and we need to know about these changes to make sure your insurance is up to date. Our goal is to provide you with the proper coverage at a competitive price. We understand that price is important to you however the “True Cost of Insurance” includes the out of pocket costs you incur when you do not have the proper protection.

Our clients will be receiving this Annual Review Checklist this month.  We ask you to complete it and send it back to us for us to review.  If you are not our client fill it out and send it to your agent.

I am going on vacation this summer and I am renting a car. Should I purchase the LDW (Loss Deductible Waiver)?

Teen Driver Insurance and Resources

We get many calls to our office asking “When I rent a car should I purchase the rental car companies damage waiver?”

So, below is an article from our website addressing this questions.  Contact us if you have any questions at 215-885-2200 or through our website.

Q: I am going on vacation this summer and I am renting a car.  Should I purchase the LDW (Loss Deductible Waiver)?

A: Spencer Insurance cannot make this decision for you; however we will provide you some guidance.  It may make sense to purchase this coverage but it will cost you some additional money.

Advantages of purchasing LDW:

  • Waives responsibility for all losses to the car, loss of use, towing and storage fees, etc.
  • You do not pay a deductible
  • You have an immediate settlement and do not have the aggravation of filing a claim with your Personal Auto Insurance Company
  • Protects the renter’s Personal Auto Policy.  Since you did not make a claim on your personal auto policy your rates will not increase due to the accident.
  • Most Personal Auto Policies only cover you when you are in the United States, Puerto Rico or Canada

Disadvantages of purchasing LDW:

  • The cost
  • Coverage is voided for restricted use or unauthorized driver

Disadvantages of relying on your Personal Auto Policy:

  • If you do not have physical damage coverage on any of your personally owed cars you have no physical damage on the rental car since the coverage for the rental car follows the coverage on your personal auto.
  • Loss of use is limited or excluded
  • Towing and storage fees limited or excluded
  • You pay a deductible
  • Problems with settlement
  • Possible premium increase
  • You may be delayed at the rental car counter when you return the car

You need to decide if paying the additional cost for the LDW is warranted.  Hopefully this summary will guide you in your decision.  Please call our office to discuss this topic BEFORE you rent the car to make sure your coverage will extend to the car you are renting.

What to do if you are in a car accident.

Charlie teen driver accident 001

Having a car accident can be a very traumatic experience especially when it is your first accident. Most car accidents are minor events so we want to give you a few tips.  Cell phones can be very helpful in the event of an auto accident.  Try to make sure the phone is fully charged when driving so you can use it to take pictures and call for help.  Here are a few tips should you have a car accident.

First, be prepared in the event you have a claim:

  • Review your coverage with Spencer Insurance Agency to make sure you have the coverage you need.
  • Have one of our ID card holders with your vehicle registration, insurance card and emergency contact information. (The ID card holder has tips on what to ask for when exchanging information.  Call us for one if you don’t have one in every car you own.)
  • Pen and paper
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Raingear (poncho) and blanket

When in an accident:

  • Pull over to a nearby safe location if possible. If not move yourself and your passengers to a safe location near your car.
  • Stay calm and treat everyone courteously.
  • Call 911 immediately if there are any injuries. If you are injured do nothing but wait for help.
  • Contact the police. If there are no injuries or a car does not need to be towed the police may not come.
  • Try to locate witnesses.
  • Use your cell phone to:
    • Take a picture of the other driver’s license and insurance ID card.
    • Take a picture of the other car’s license plate.
    • Take a picture of the damage to the other car and your car.
    • Take a picture of the driver and any other people in the other car.
  • Exchange information but do not admit fault. Apologizing may seem to be the nice thing to do but you could be admitting fault.
    • Name, phone number, address, email address, license number and the names of all occupants and witnesses
    • Insurance information including company name, policy number and phone number. (If other driver does not have insurance ID card call the police and tell them driver does not have proof of insurance.
    • Get officer’s name and badge number.
    • Find out the location of the accident (city, township or borough) so you can get a copy of the police report.
  • If your car is not drivable call for roadside assistance. Some car insurance policies will include towing/roadside assistance otherwise the police will help you find a tow company.
  • After you have collected the information call your insurance company and report the accident. Most Insurance ID cards will have the claim number of the company and your policy number.
  • Call your agent

We hope you never have a car accident. Spencer Insurance Agency wants you to be prepared if you do.  Make sure all drivers, especially teen drivers know what to do when they have an accident.  Please feel free to print this email and put it in with your ID card.  Call us at 215-885-2200 to review your coverage before you have an accident.  Happy Spring!

Car Sharing – What you need to know. . .

Transportation Networking Companies (TNCs) like Uber and Lyft have been growing in popularity in the Philadelphia area. There have been a lot of news reports in the newspapers, radio, and television about the Philadelphia Parking Authority’s response to these companies. TNCs provide pre-arranged transportation services for compensation by using a smartphone application to connect passengers with drivers using their personal vehicles. This is commonly known as ridesharing.

Our purpose here is not to weigh the merits of these TNCs. Our purpose is to make it clear to our clients that your personal auto policy and personal umbrella policy provides no coverage for losses that occur in connection with TNCs.

If you choose to become involved with a TNC then you must make sure you obtain the proper auto coverage to protect you and your passengers from lawsuits and your car from collision or comprehensive losses. While some TNCs have taken steps in the right direction to cover their drivers during rides, you need to make sure these policies have the limits you need. It is imperative that you require them to provide this coverage as coverage on your own could be very costly.

Here are some questions to ask:

  • Are my passengers and I covered for injuries that occur when I am driving for the TNC?
  • What are the liability limits on their policy?
  • Is there Uninsured Motorist and Underinsured Motorist coverage in case I am involved in an accident with an uninsured driver or involved in a hit and run accident?
  • Is my vehicle covered for collision and comprehensive losses? What is my deductible?
  • Is there coverage for Property Damage I cause while driving for a TNC?
  • When does my coverage become effective? Is it primary coverage?

If you are considering participating in this type of venture I would suggest you have an attorney review your contract with the TNC. Call us with any questions in regards to your insurance coverage.

October 19 – 25, 2014 is National Teen Driver Safety Week

texting and driving

Spencer Insurance is committed to Teen Driver Safety. During National Teen Driver Safety Week our agency will be posting valuable tips all week on our Facebook Page about Teen Driver Safety (https://www.facebook.com/spencerinsuranceagency). Check us out. Go to our page and click “Like” so you will be sure to receive these valuable tips.

Have you checked out our “Parents of Teen Drivers” website? This website provides parents valuable information as they undertake teaching their teen driver to be a safe driver. Some of the content we share is:

  • Tips and Suggestions including a “Teenager – Parent Driving Contract”
  • A list of driver education schools in the area
  • Valuable links including links to Pa, NJ and DE Department of Motor Vehicles
  • A link to our “Safe Teen Driving Course” which provides 16 lessons for parents to use when they are completing the 65 hours of mandated adult-supervised skill building with their student driver.

Go to our “Parent of a Teen Driver” website for this valuable information.

The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Research Institute has a special website to support National Teen Driver Safety Week. Go to our “Parents of Teen Drivers” website to link onto this site. CHOP provides Stats and Facts along with additional links and multimedia presentations.

Spending some quality time teaching your teen driver to be a safe driver is one of the best things a parent can do to keep their child alive. Teaching by example is the most effective technique. Today, cell phone distraction has become the number one killer of teen drivers, surpassing the number of teenager drinking and driving deaths. What example are you showing your teen driver?

Let Spencer Insurance help you by taking advantage of the material we provide on our “Parent of Teen Drivers” website. And . . . don’t forget to review your auto insurance to make sure you have enough protection as you are 5 times more likely to have an accident in your household if you have a teen driver.

Fall Maintenance Tips for your Home and Auto

The Fall Season can be a beautiful time of the year in our area. With cooler temperatures and the leaves changing, the fall is a great time of the year to get out of the house and enjoy the outdoors.

Fall is also a great time to prepare for those cold winter days that are coming. I imagine you remember our winter last year with all the snow, ice and school and business closings. Hopefully, this winter will be a bit milder.

Here are a few tips to prepare your home and auto for winter:

  • Put the ice scraper and snow removal tool in your car. Remember a few years ago we had a snowstorm in October?
  • Check the tread on your tires to make sure you have proper traction in the snow.
  • Replace worn wiper blades.
  • Prepare a winter emergency Kit for your home and auto. Check out http://www.ready.gov/kit-storage-locations for some kit ideas.
  • Have your furnace serviced and cleaned by a qualified Technician. Replace your furnace filter.
  • Move flammable materials away from your house and attached garage. Keep them in a shed away from your home.
  • Insulate pipes that are exposed to cold areas in the house.
  • Check for damage to your roof and gutters. Clean any debris from your gutters.
  • Have your chimney inspected by a professional.
  • Clean the clothes dryer exhaust ducts and space under the dryer.
  • Check your fire extinguishers to make sure they are not out of date. If you are not sure it’s best to replace them.
  • Trim trees around your house so the weight of ice and snow will not cause them to rub against your home.
  • If you have a storm sewer near your home make sure it is clear of any debris like sticks and leaves.

A little maintenance on your home now can save you from having a claim later. This can help you save money on your homeowner’s insurance. For more tips on saving money on your auto and homeowner’s policies go to our website. Enjoy the Fall weather and let’s hope we have a better winter this year. Call us today if we can be of service for any of your insurance needs.
