The Devil is in the details . . .

Teen Driver Insurance and Resources

I am sure you have heard the saying “The devil is in the details.”  This applies to insurance as well.  When you shop around for insurance you may think you are being quoted the same coverage only to find out the reason the quote is cheaper is because you have lesser coverage. When you call the 800 number to get a quote in 5 or 15 minutes you don’t know if the person you are talking to has been on the job for a week or 7 years. They may know very little about insurance and just follow a script. They have no skin in the game if they give you poor advice or if they don’t tell you the coverage you have is not sufficient.  They may not talk to you again, ever.

That is why Spencer Insurance Agency asks our clients to call us when they get a quote from another company before they consider switching to a new company.  We are a local independent agency which means we write with more than one company and all of our staff members are licensed professionals, not just order-takers.  You can even stop in and talk to us! Our staff understands insurance and knows that details are important. You talk to the same people when you call us.

Spencer Insurance Agency is not offended when a client calls and tells us they feel their rates are too high.  We will review your policies and see if there is anything we can do to bring the price down that will not put you at a greater risk because you have less coverage. We have several quality carriers not just one.

Recently, a client notified us they switched to another company to get a much better rate.  When the client sent us the new policies for us to review they were shocked to find how much coverage they lost.  They had a 2% wind deductible which means if there was a  thunder storm with strong winds and their house sustained wind damage (tree blown onto house, shingles blown off roof, etc.) that they had a $8,000 deductible. The policy our client had with our carrier was a $1,000 deductible regardless of the cause of the covered loss.  They also did not have any water backup coverage and other coverage was missing as well.  When they called the new company to inquire about the missing coverage they could not get through to anyone that could help them and became very frustrated by the service. Yes, they got a better price but the coverage and service they received was very poor.  They cancelled those policies and came back to Spencer Insurance.

We understand that price is important but please call us before you switch so we can help evaluate the offer you received before you switch.  A savings of $500 could end up costing you $20,000 when you have a claim.

Call us today at 215-885-2200 for a review.

Know your Homeowner’s insurance exclusions before you have a claim.

In late January of this year there was a major sinkhole in the Glenside area.  You may have read about it or saw it on the news.  The sink hole swallowed up a pickup truck and may have damaged the foundations of two homes.  The investigation is still going on to find the cause.

If the foundation on your home was damaged and the house condemned would your homeowner’s policy cover the loss?  Probably not.  Most homeowner’s insurance policies have exclusions.  You need to read the policy and be aware of the exclusions.

One of the exclusions is “Earth Movement.”  Earth Movement can be an earthquake, sinkhole, landslide and mudslide among other things and all are excluded from most homeowner’s policies.  You can add back some of these coverages by endorsement however most people don’t due to the cost.

There are other exclusions on your homeowner’s policy. Some of them include: Flood, Ordinance or Law, nuclear hazard and war.

It is impossible to cover everything that could happen to your home but you need to be aware that you may be able to buy back coverage that is excluded for an additional premium. Whether that makes sense is up to you.

You may not even be aware that you are in an area with these risks. Contact us today at 215-885-2200 to discuss the exclusions.  Don’t be caught short when you have a claim.

Fall Maintenance Tips for your Home and Auto

The Fall Season can be a beautiful time of the year in our area. With cooler temperatures and the leaves changing, the fall is a great time of the year to get out of the house and enjoy the outdoors.

Fall is also a great time to prepare for those cold winter days that are coming. I imagine you remember our winter last year with all the snow, ice and school and business closings. Hopefully, this winter will be a bit milder.

Here are a few tips to prepare your home and auto for winter:

  • Put the ice scraper and snow removal tool in your car. Remember a few years ago we had a snowstorm in October?
  • Check the tread on your tires to make sure you have proper traction in the snow.
  • Replace worn wiper blades.
  • Prepare a winter emergency Kit for your home and auto. Check out http://www.ready.gov/kit-storage-locations for some kit ideas.
  • Have your furnace serviced and cleaned by a qualified Technician. Replace your furnace filter.
  • Move flammable materials away from your house and attached garage. Keep them in a shed away from your home.
  • Insulate pipes that are exposed to cold areas in the house.
  • Check for damage to your roof and gutters. Clean any debris from your gutters.
  • Have your chimney inspected by a professional.
  • Clean the clothes dryer exhaust ducts and space under the dryer.
  • Check your fire extinguishers to make sure they are not out of date. If you are not sure it’s best to replace them.
  • Trim trees around your house so the weight of ice and snow will not cause them to rub against your home.
  • If you have a storm sewer near your home make sure it is clear of any debris like sticks and leaves.

A little maintenance on your home now can save you from having a claim later. This can help you save money on your homeowner’s insurance. For more tips on saving money on your auto and homeowner’s policies go to our website. Enjoy the Fall weather and let’s hope we have a better winter this year. Call us today if we can be of service for any of your insurance needs.

Daylight Saving Time ends and some Fall Home Mainenance Tips. . .

clocks back for DST end

Daylight Savings Time ends this weekend.  Don’t forget to set back your clocks so you can enjoy that extra hour of sleep.

Now that you are rested take action to protect your family by replacing all the batteries in your home’s smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.  How many times do we hear about a row home in Philadelphia that caught fire and someone died in the fire?  There were no working smoke detectors. Go out, buy a bunch of batteries and replace them now.  It could end up being the best money you spent.

Here are some Fall home maintenance tips to help you avoid possible claims.  Even if you have the proper protection, filing a claim is still an inconvenience.  Plus most homeowner’s insurance deductibles are $1,000.  So take these steps now to prevent the loss:

  •  Clear all leaves from your gutters and nearby storm drains to prevent water backup
  • Inspect your roof for damage or loose shingles
  • Trim trees and bushes that are rubbing against your house or roof.
  • Turn off all your outside faucets and hose connections to prevent pipes freezing and bursting.
  • Have a professional tune up your furnace, wood stove and chimney to prevent explosions, fires and puff-backs.
  • Test your sump pump to make sure the battery is working.  Consider a battery back-up if you do not have one.  Google “how to test a sump pump.”
  • Winterize the lawn mower so it works next Spring.
  • Get ready for winter
    • Make sure you have enough shovels and ice melt
    • Put your snow removers and ice scrappers in the car.
    • Tune up the snow blower before you need it.
    • Check out this website for more winter tips.

Can we find you when there is an Emergency?

floodHopefully your agent has an Emergency Contact Program in place.

What is an Emergency Contact Program?  Imagine this.  Disaster strikes – and we don’t know how to find you.

Here are just a few examples of how the Emergency Contact Program can prevent or help resolve disasters:

  • A mother and two young children were in an automobile accident.  The mother was unconscious, but the two children were only bruised.  The police found our card in her wallet and called.  We contacted the mother’s Emergency Contact – an aunt, who immediately went to the hospital and got the children.
  • A client’s home was badly damaged by fire while they were on vacation.  The Emergency contact contacted us.  We got the claim going immediately and the windows were boarded up before five that afternoon.
  • A client’s small business was broken into one Friday evening.  His business-neighbor, an Emergency Contact saw the damage to the front door and called us.  We contacted our client and had the claim going before the client arrived.

Unfortunately, the list of things that can go wrong goes on and on.  We want to do everything we can to make these easier when they do.

Complete The Disaster Preventer, which asks for your most recent contact information, (just to make sure we have the latest numbers), and up to three Emergency Contacts.

We will hold your contacts name in confidence and will not solicit them as clients.

Can you please take a moment to complete it and return it to our office?  This way, if something happens to you or your property, we might be able to keep your situation from getting worse.  Make sure you give your agent your emergency contact information.

Do you remember the Transistor radio?

I age myself when I say I remember and have used the rotary telephone, pagers, 8 track tapes, transistor radio, encyclopedias and the record player.  Yes at one time music came on big and small disc called records.

Well, times have changed and now my cell phone is not only my phone but how I get my email, play my music, watch video and movies, take pictures and videos, get directions to your home, play games and search for information. Let that sink in for a minute.  My cell phone now has more power than the first computer our office used back in the early 80s.

I mention this because how we communicate with you has also changed dramatically over the last few years.  You and I have many methods to communicate to each other.  No way is the best way.  The best way is the way that is easiest for you!  So, our agency has many methods for you to use.  You choose which way works best for you.

What are the options?

  • Mail – Yes the US postal service is still in business and we will continue to communicate with you by mail.  Our mailing address continues to be PO Box 54 Jenkintown, PA 19046-0054.

  • Social Networking – The newest means of communication, social networking, allows you to message us directly.  Spencer Insurance has just updated our Facebook page, so search for us as Spencer Insurance Agency.  You will see our familiar logo when you get to our page.  “Like” our Facebook page so you get all our valuable alerts and tips.  Our Facebook page also has a link to our website.
  • Our Website – Our website was recently updated.  You can get valuable tips and information on our website.  You can request an ID card, send a service request, request a quote and contact one of our staff through our website.  There is a list of our companies’ phone numbers and websites so you can go directly to them to immediately make a payment or report a claim. Our website is available to you 24 hours a day every day of the year.

The key to all these options is to provide you, our clients, with an easy method to contact us.  We strive to provide you the best personal service. When you call our office a staff member will update your file by asking you for your cell phone number and email address.  Please remember to contact us should your phone number or email address change.
